Abhishek Bachchan does not believe in the term ‘pan-India’ films; says it is not fair to label any industry

With the resounding success of films like Baahubali, KGF, RRR, Pushpa-The Rise, and now KGF-2 across India, the term Pan-India came to be used for films catering to audiences across the country speaking and understanding different languages. For the longest time, the Hindi film industry also known as Bollywood was what was considered “Indian cinema” while films made in other languages were bracketed as regional films.

Amid the massive success of films from down south, Hindi films are now being criticised for not being up to the mark. Actor Abhishek Bachchan who has been a part of the industry for over two decades now wants to stay clear of any such classification. In a recent interview, Abhishek said that now is a wonderful period for the film industry and that a good film works and a bad film does not.

Further, he also criticized and questioned the widely used term Pan-India. “I don’t believe in this term. What does that even mean? Do we use this for any other industry? Not at all. We are a large cinema-going population and we love our cinema. It has never mattered which language it has been made in,” he said to Indian Express.

Another accusation against the Hindi film industry is its love for remakes. The number of films from the south that are being remade in Hindi has significantly shot up. Commenting on the same, “Not at all. Why would you say that? Are you telling me that Hindi films are not being remade in the South? That is an unfair question because no matter what you say the answer comes out defensive. We all are part of the Indian film industry. We might work in different languages, but we are part of the same industry. We all cater to the same audience. It is not entirely fair to label any film industry. Films in Hindi or any language have always been remade. It is not a new phenomenon. There has always been an exchange (of content) all the time. Nothing wrong in that,” Abhishek said.
