Taapsee Pannu says she shares Mithali Raj’s views on audience’s sexist attitude towards them

Taapsee Pannu shared the first look poster of her upcoming sports biopic, Shabaash Mithu, yesterday and since then fans have been over the moon with excitement. To add to that, today the actress followed it up with the first look poster of Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad as well. Indeed, Taapsee has bagged some great titles! Speaking to a publication about her collaboration with the Rahul Dholakia directorial, Shabaash Mithu, Taapsee explained how she was brought on board and how she finds her connect with cricketer Mithali Raj on whose life the biopic is based.
While it might be easy to replicate the Indian women’s cricket team skipper’s look, what Taapsee says will be crucial is her training hard to get the technique right and also to understand the attitude of Mithali. However, the good part is that Taapsee is herself quite the game changer in her own field, that is entertainment, just like Mithali and so, she can relate with Mithali on many levels.

In the interview, Taapsee said that she was brought on board in the first place because she and Mithali had similar ideologies. She explained how it was important for her and the film’s team to bring out the personality that is Mithali more than replicating her look.
The actress has been in touch with the skipper as well as her friend and fellow cricketer Nooshin Al Khadeer since the poster shoot for Shabaas Mithu, and Taapsee was overwhelmed when Mithali texted her saying she looked just like her on the poster. Taapsee also hopes that Mithali feels the same way after watching the biopic.

However, this won’t come easy as that will involve a lot of rigorous training on Taapsee’s part. She was guided during the poster shoot by Nooshin and will be trained for the entire film by Nooshin until she gets it perfectly right.

During a promotional event for the biopic, Taapsee was heard saying that she related to Mithali on the sexist behavior that they have been facing for a very long time in their respective industries. While it’s in subtle ways, it does highlight the reality that even today, no male cricketer is asked about his favourite female cricketer. Similarly, for years, Taapsee has been dealing with the question of which male actor does she want to be paired with. The actress was appalled by the fact that a woman cannot have a standalone identity even today and if she does, it comes with a lot of struggle.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, Shabaas Mithu is scheduled to go on floors in May this year. It is produced by Viacom18 Studios and is slated for a February 5, 2021 release.
