Vishal Bhardwaj remembers Irrfan Khan; says, “A part of me has died with him”

Though Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan is not among us, he indeed doesn’t need any introduction. With his repertoire, he not only left an impression on the audience but also made a space for himself. The late actor and renowned filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj shared a special bond. In fact, when Irrfan passed away in 2020, during the nationwide lockdown, Vishal Bhardwaj was among the few who made it to the funeral of Khan. Recently, Vishal, who is currently busy in the promotion of his son’s directorial debut film Kuttey, opened up about his friendship with Irrfan.

It all happened during his interaction with Pinkvilla. The portal asked the director-turned-producer if he still misses Irrfan. In his thoughtful response, Vishal said, “You miss Irrfan in every film. Every film I see, I make, when I see good cinema I miss Irrfan. That is the biggest loss, personal loss to me, and I think for the whole industry.”

Recalling the untimely death of Irrfan, Vishal further added, “I feared that he would be gone much before his time but didn’t expect that it would be so devastating and ravaging to me personally. It feels as if I am torn into two parts. A part of me has died with him.”

Besides Irrfan, Vishal also briefly spoke about the poor performance of Hindi cinema at the box office. He asserted, “It will take time, and after four or five years we will be able to understand what happened and why it happened. Because the way Covid has affected us socially, our social behaviour has changed. So it will take a little more time to understand because it’s not just that good films are working, people are also going for bad films, and sometimes are not going for good films. It’s very strange.”

He further said, “That’s why I went to see a few films to know why this film has worked. I thought it would be a good film, but when I went to watch it – I won’t name it – I was so disappointed. If this is the kind of film that is working in theatres then definitely we don’t know what’s happening right now. We all are in that phase, where we don’t know what’s happening.”

Talking about Kuttey, helmed by debutant Aasman Bhardwaj, the ensemble star cast of the film features Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Kumud Mishra, Radhika Madan, and Konkana Sen Sharma, among others. The film is slated to release on January 13.
